- What is headup? headup is your personal discovery agent to the Web. It’s an intelligent browser add-on that enriches your browsing experience by bringing meaningful content to you. headup works on Firefox and provides easy access to personally-relevant content from all over the Web. The data is presented as an additional layer on top of the page you're viewing. headup brings you discoveries about products, places, movies or bands you'll like or be curious about - all that without interfering with your browsing. Currently headup is in an early beta stage and is tested by a relatively small group of users. Wanna find out more? Check out our video.
- What’s so special about headup? headup isn't another search engine. In fact, it is not a search engine at all! What we do is give you information that is tailored especially for you, whereas what Google, Yahoo, and other search engines give you is information that may be relevant to everybody.
- How does headup work? The World Wide Web is an amazing place that features tons of amazing stuff. The task of finding out what's going on when so much is happening can easily make anyone dizzy, not to mention take the wind out of your sails. Ever wondered about all that information that exists out there on the Web but you don’t know about it? That's why headup, your personal discovery agent, can make your life so much easier.
- What can headup do for me? By mashing up information from various sources, headup connects you and your online world. headup features stuff that your friends liked and we think that you may like or be interested in. For example – headup figures where you are and then provides you with images and videos that were geo-tagged with the same location. headup lists the bands or dj’s your friends were excited about and gives you the ‘heads up’ about the next time they’re gonna play close to you.
- How does headup know all these things about my friends? headup uses various sources and databases from which it collects its information. In fact, we only aggregate info that exists publicly out there on the Web and bring it to you in a refined, personalized manner. headup will never expose anything that was not uploaded, anything that the program (or you) are not supposed to see. headup cannot provide access to things you don't have access to – headup only presents material that was meant for you to view.
- How does headup keep my privacy? We at headup value your privacy. Just to make things clear - we will never identify who you are as a user, what your passwords are, or who your friends are. Spying is not our thing. We don't give any information to anyone - all of your info is kept safe on your computer. It means that no one can see it except for you. That’s why we call headup a personal discovery agent – your information remains personal and private. headup is all about enhancing your user experience without compromising your privacy in any way. If you like to read the legal stuff, our privacy policy is detailed here.
- So what kind of data is sent out from my PC? The only thing that headup collects is anonymous usage statistics. In addition, headup uses your contacts in order to provide you with information, but they cannot be connected to you and we will never contact them without your explicit permission.
- I love/hate something/everything. How can I let you know? The easiest way to be heard is by using the Feedback button on the headup window. You simply click on it and then tell us what you think. You liked something? You found some features annoying? Even worse – headup annoys you? By all means let us know! Another way to reach us is by sending an email to feedback@headup.com. We promise to read every comment, complaint or praise that you may have and to respond promptly.
- I LOVE HEADUP! Can I invite my friends? We’re glad to hear you LOVE headup -- we love it too. Do take note, that we are still in early beta stage. That’s why at the moment, headup operates on an ‘invite only’ model – we’re running all kinds of tests and improvements to give you the best product we can. Feel free, however, to tell your friends about us and refer them to our website. We’ll open headup for everyone to use as soon as possible!
- How can I join the beta? Since we’re currently in early beta stage, headup is being currently tested by a relatively small group of users. We are adding new testers every day, but keeping the volume low for now. The more progress we make, the better headup will be. What we're saying is that we’re asking you to be patient but in the meanwhile, you’re welcome to leave your details here. Waiting is worthwhile (headup rocks!).
- What are the system requirements? headup currently runs on Firefox version 2 and 3 on both Windows and Intel base OS X. headup requires Microsoft Silverlight 2.0 for its user privacy and multimedia capabilities, and that’s why it is installed as well. For the time being, the application works sufficiently with modern computers equipped with 750MB of memory, but works much better with 1.5GB of RAM and more. In any event, it is unlikely that your memory consumption will reach these levels. We are working on reducing memory footprints for the final version.
- Ok, I understand headup is in beta. What issues should I expect? As you can see for yourself (or will see after you installed) headup is great but there are few known issues that are being taken care of as we speak. There are still bugs and some UI glitches that we are addressing; the reason we release the product for external users testing is to focus our attention on the important issues. So please be patient in case you encounter some of the known issues that we’re currently working on solving or improving.
- Memory consumption: headup may cause the Firefox process memory to consume up to 300-400MB. We are working on reducing it in the very near future.
- From time to time, headup might stop working – the headup icons won't appear or won't respond. No stress - this shouldn’t harm your regular Firefox experience in any way. To restart headup, simply restart Firefox or use the headup toggle button (located at the bottom-right corner) to disable and re-enable headup.
- headup currently operates on a single Firefox window. The first Firefox window you opened is the one in which headup appears. We are working on a solution that will enable headup to operate in multiple Firefox windows.
- At times, the discoveries that headup brings you are not 100% accurate. We're trying to give you the most relevant info but please remember that we’re constantly improving our system.
- Text cannot be copied from the headup window.
- Why don’t I see a
next to this item?
In some websites, headup can figure out specific words and offers more information about them. We are constantly adding more and more websites in which you can find the headup icon. In the meanwhile, you can always highlight a term, right-click and start discovering with headup!
Also, if there’s a particular website you want us to add, please let us know about it by sending your wish to feedback@headup.com.
- How can I know if my version of headup is the most updated one available? That’s easy! There are 3 ways to find out:
-
One click on the
icon located at the bottom of your browser brings you to the "About headup" pop-up window. This is where you learn which version you currently have. In order to find out if there's a more updated version available - please consult our blog.
- On the Firefox browser toolbar you can go to Tools - Add-ons - and click on the "Find Updates" button on the bottom of the window.
- Another way to get the updated version is to exit Firefox. Once you re-enter Firefox headup should get automatically updated.
- I don’t like what headup shows about me. What can I do? What headup shows you is a collection of data from varied sources – just like the possibility of Googling yourself and coming up with something you don’t like, or don’t approve of - we’re just showing you what’s out there. We don’t add anything! Also, we don’t have the access to change the original website on which the info appears. Rather, you should change the privacy settings of your shared content at the site in which it appears and headup will respect it.
- I'm having all sorts of trouble logging in. Help! Hmm, start with verifying your password, then make sure that the email you're typing is the same on you signed-up with. Still stuck? Give us a shout at support@headup.com – we promise we’ll be there for you.
- Hey, can I get some tech support over here? Currently we don't have online tech support. Nevertheless, our developers (and management team) are always here to help. Do send an email to support@headup.com specifying all your miseries, agonies and frustrations with headup (in case you had any) and we'll do our best to solve the problem ASAP and send you our warmest, deepest empathy with some good advice.
Moreover, headup integrates and cross-references data from many social networking tools such as Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and Friendfeed (to name only a few) in order to generate insights that no other tool today offers. A full list of supported services is provided here.
To sum up, headup reaches and mashes-up info you and your friends updated in social networks and content from all over the Web to keep you in the loop with what your friends liked, talked or wrote about, the music they were listened to, and even their future plans.
headup works behind the scenes -- it scans each webpage and points out anything related to your world: your people, your interests, your town. All this information is now a click away. By cross-referencing the information your friends uploaded, or the traces they left during their online activities, headup finds out for you the things that are most likely to entice you. headup doesn’t recommend, it highlights stuff you'd like to know.
Here’s an example: suppose you're interested in learning more about an artist that a friend of yours likes on Last.fm. Forget about all the hassle you had to go through when you were seeking for info in the good old pre-headup days. headup now takes care of all that for you – we really want to set all that info free for you. You no longer need to start looking for information all over the Internet - no more browsing around dozens of webpages in order to find out more.
headup sorts the information according to the item: you can listen to songs you don't know, watch videos, read relevant posts in your friends' blogs and even find out the next time this artist plays in your town. We point out the songs that your friends liked, similar artists, and bring you future events related to this artist or the band. We reach social networks and cross-reference between the info from your profile in various websites and your location. All that without spyware, without payment, without exposing any of your discoveries to anyone. Now, isn't that awesome?
